What Does "Discovering" Mean to Me?

What Does Discovery Mean?
Discovery means to learn new things. It means finding something new. It also means to work as a team so you learn how to do things together. My picture is me discovering a fossil. The thing that is in my hand is a magnifying glass. This is what discovery means. There are a lot more meanings but these are some of mine.

What Makes an Effective Professional Arcade Game?JUMP is a professional arcade game. The name of the company that supports this game is Camadro, Inc. The object of the game is to have the little man dodge the monster. To jump over the monster, press the up arrow key. The way to move the man is by using the arrow keys. The man will shoot the monster if you press the space bar. There are these platforms that move up and down to a new floor. One last thing you need to know is that there are square dots that you try to collect. On the bottom of the game screen, the rules are displayed. I gave the rating of difficulty a 3 star rating if 1 was the lowest and 4 the highest. I have never won this game because you cannot beat the game. You try to get far by not losing your lives. You have 3 lives.

I think the materials you need to build this game are glue, tape, scissors, cardboard, bottles, and rubber bands. The game probably cost around $20-$25.

The URL of this game is http://www.freearcade.com/Jump.flash/Jump.html.

Design Brief
What is the Concept Design of My Crusie Arcade Game?
The name of our Crusie Arcade game that we designed is Pinball Turramaster. To play the game you have to put a bouncy ball on a rubber band and pull back. There are holes on the board that you try to get the ball into. There are different holes you want to get the ball into - like the jackpot. There is a hole that is -5 points, and you do not want to get that. We will give you oral instructions to further explain the mounted rules on the side of our game. The level of difficulty is 4 on a scale of 1-4. You can not exactly win the game, but you can get tickets and trade them in for prizes. You can get tickets by getting the ball into the holes.

Our blueprint shows two stuffed animals on the side for show. There are holes on the board that you want to get the ball into. There is a tunnel over the game and a ticket dispenser in the middle. There are sides on the game that have black duct tape and say Pinball Turramaster.
We would need tape, cardboard, scissors, bouncy balls, prizes, pencils, Styrofoam, markers and rubber bands to build our game. It will probably take 9 hours to build this game. We might have the problem of taping the game and also getting the rubber band to work.

What were the Results of Testing Our Game?
Examiner: Mrs. Greenstein

Date: Feb. 2, 2013

Praise: Very creative, fun.

Question: What does “3 points = 3 tickets” sign mean?

Polish: The rubber band needs to be reinforced.

Student Comment: Thanks, we have been working on our game called Pinball Turramaster for a long time, and we were so anxious to share with you. We tried to make it creative and colorful so it would attract people. To answer your question about the 3 points = 3 tickets it means that if you get 3 points you will get three tickets. So it would not matter if you got 1 or 100 you will get the same amount of tickets as you did points. We did not need to fix the 3 point = 3 tickets because kids understood it, and they knew it meant if you got 50 points you would get 50 tickets. We fixed the rubber band and made it a hair band and now you can pull it back as far as you want. The hairband worked great after we installed it when the kids and everybody came.

Examiner: Mr. Holgate

Date: Jan. 30, 2013

Praise: Great idea and a lot of fun to play. I would play this game multiple times.

Question: Could you add some color/decorations? What do you get differently for jackpot and super jackpot?

Polish: Add a “Game Over” hole? Have multiple back-ups for your launcher and come up with a way to quickly repair it.

Student Comment: Thank you for playing Pinball Turramaster. We hoped that people would want to play this numerous times. I would like to add some color everywhere on the board because it just looks like plain old cardboard, but I just do not think we thought about that. The prizes for the super jackpot are a handful of candy or two stuffed animals and for the jackpot you get 3 pieces of candy or a stuffed animal. That is a good idea for the “game over” hole, but I do not think we will have the time. We have a hairband now and you can pull it back as far as you can and it will not break.

Examiner: Ms. Andrews

Date: Jan. 28, 2013

Praise: This was fun! I like the idea and how the Army men make it more difficult. The design makes sense for the purpose of the game. Not too easy, not too hard!

Question: How will you keep the rubber band from breaking? Where did your idea come from?

Polish: Think of a stronger band to use as a spring for the ball (like a hair band). Maybe think about one jackpot being worth more than the other.

Student Comment: I love that you like our game, Pinball Turramaster. We had a lot of people getting our supper jackpot and jackpot. We barely had any prizes after they came, so I think we need to make the game harder so we do not waste our prizes. We fixed the rubber band to a hairband and stapled and taped the rubber band down so it would be extra steady. Thank you, Ms. Andrews, for that idea. We got the idea of our game because one day Nick was absent and Conor and I thought of doing Pinball. Then the next day Nick thought of calling it Pinball Turramaster to make it harder. Conor and I agreed so that is how we got the idea of the game.

Make It Better
How Can We Make the Crusie Arcade Game Better?
Reflection on Project

What can we do to improve our Arcade Creation?

I think we can improve our game by making it more colorful, having more prizes, and making it harder.

Specifically, how would we do this?

We can do this by getting more supplies and more prizes. Also making a game over hole on our game
(Mr. Holgate suggested).

Reflection on Process

What did you learn to do with the Crusie Arcade Project?

I learned how to make an arcade game, and I learned that tape is hard to use, and Mr. May is very good at using it.

What do you know now that you didn’t know before doing the Project?

I didn’t know it took a lot of work before even starting the project.

What can you do know that you couldn’t before doing this project?

I could not work with tape as well as I can now, and I know how to make an arcade game and I did not know how to do that before.

What did you like about the project that helped your learning?

I liked that we had to work as a team, and that Mr. May would give us directions but then leave us left to do the work without his help.

What could have been done differently to help your learning?

I the think we should have had more time to share our game to the kids and adults.

A Final Reflection:

I think we could make Pinball Turramaster better by making it more colorful and having more prizes. I think we should also make a game-over hole. We could make our game better by getting more supplies, getting more prizes, and having 30 more minutes to work on our game. It was a lot of work to get started; we had to draw a blueprint and do a lot of writing. Then, we had to do a lot of building. Afterward, we shared our game with friends and parents. Finally, we wrote a lot about our game, and I mean a lot. So the first day we started, Nick was not there. Conor and I had to come up with the game by ourselves. So we came up with the game pinball. During the next class we asked Nick if he was ok with our game. He was okay with our game, but he wanted to add something, and we all agreed. That is how our game came to be. The game was built by teamwork and collaboration, and we needed lots of supplies. Mr. May helped us with taping because it is very hard to use. We also needed each other to build. I think our process of building was fun but hard. The problems we had were that I think we could have worked better together and our game would not stand at first. I liked our final project, but I think we should have done the things that could have made the game better. In conclusion, we did a great job on our game. I thank Mr. May for his help and for buying our supplies.
